Aquaponics Volunteers Needed

Picture15Mission Service Vacations and Farm Stay-cations are all the rage these days. How about all that but in a tropical setting? That is what Worldwide Heart To Heart is offering! We are looking for the perfect match in a single person or couple, young or retired, that would like to spend a minimum of 3 to 6 months at the Children’s Village doing very meaningful and rewarding service work. You would be a Sustainable Agriculture Volunteer. The Agriculture Management Team will provide you with all the training you need. In no time you would have gleaned a lifetime of sustainable organic farming experience. You would become an expert and operate the large Aquaponics system that grows the fish and vegetables for the children and staff. As a volunteer, the Aquaponics systems are your main focus, growing food organically, fueled by the tilapia fish in the raceway. You would also be managing the moringa trees, which feed the children, fish, chickens and pigs, and also managing forage grasses. H2H is working toward growing all the feed for its animals, so you would also be caring for the BSFL bins, an important source of protein for all the livestock and fish. As an organic farmer extraordinaire you would be managing the red worm bins that generate the worm castings that allow us to germinate seeds quickly and also keep the tropical insect onslaught at bay, while still growing organically. You would also help manage the egg layer chickens and the meat chickens. All this adventure is wrapped up among palm trees, warm breezes and sunshine. On weekends, volunteers still feed critters and see to minimal checks on systems, but those days are yours to go to church, and play soccer with the children, and more.

This is the perfect opportunity for a young person or couple to get sustainable organic training and experience. This is the perfect training opportunity for those looking at the mission field in the future. And of course this may be the perfect fit for a retired person or couple looking for a service adventure.

Meals and housing are provided at the Children’s Village. So when can you start? The sooner the better. We are looking for volunteers to begin as soon as possible. Can’t come now? Inquire about Interning at a later date. Fluent English communication and writing is required. Spanish is helpful but not required. Ability to communicate via computer (e-mail/Skype/Text) and complete reports a must. Some gardening experience /aptitude and troubleshooting skills are a must. All candidates must possess a valid passport and provide references (including one Pastoral reference), and be able to pass a background check and interview.
