In Grades two and three we are learning about The Universe and our solar system! The children were fascinated by hearing about the Hubble Telescope and how humans have the ability to discover space phenomena through modern technology. We researched together why Pluto is called a “dwarf planet” and many of the children adopted Pluto as their favorite because often it is excluded from our solar system. All of the grade 2 and 3 students are very good at including everyone in activities and their love for Pluto was a good example of this. Recently the class has started doing “Math a Minute” and have challenged to beat Miss Ashley in how well they know their times tables. It has made learning how to multiply numbers very fun. We are also learning about kindness and how we can be kind through our actions, and words. Many of the children demonstrated excellent ways of being kind to other students in our kindness week. They wrote what they did on a strip of paper and attached it as a link on our kindness chain for a classroom decoration. These children have welcomed me as a new teacher well and have shown me much about the exciting Honduran culture and the Spanish language.

The fourth grade students are learning about comparative adjectives in grammar class. Learning when to use certain words, root words, and different forms and tenses of words. Once they learn the different forms they are quickly learning how to structure them into sentences properly. They’re also really starting to have their times tables memorized and most are quickly able to answer any multiplication question from 1-9. In science class they’re learning all about the solar system and are just about to start learning about the rotation of planets and the earth which I’m sure they’re going to find fascinating.
The grade five students are learning about letter combinations and their respective sounds. Pronunciation is very important at this level for kids wanting to speak English well. They’re learning how to spell some very difficult words now and enjoying the spelling games that we play in class! In Science class they’re learning all sorts of amazing facts about the earth’s composition, ecosystems, and habitats. They all seemed to find the idea of cloning the Wolly Mammoth fascinating. These kids are an energetic group that are full of animation, they love to have fun, laugh, and prank each other.
