Hilda is 18 and has been at the Village for about 5 years. She is an extremely hard worker. Here is her story as told by her, only translated into English. I know you will enjoy it!
To start my name is Hilda Reyes. I am going to tell you a little bit of my story.
When I was a little girl, I was always helping my Mom wash clothes and cook. One time, some people arrived to my house; they saw that I was the only one helping my mom. They saw that they wanted to adopt me, but I never wanted to leave my family. One day a women came and wanted to help my Mom and our family. They talked for a long time, but my Mom decided she didn’t want her to help us, because she wanted us to all be able to grow up together. The time passed, I turned eight and then nine. Then the lady came back again, her name was Mama Guadalupe Castro. She came back to talk to my Mom again about helping us, but this time my Mom accepted. However, my Dad was at work when all of this happened. I went to my Dad’s work and told him that my Mom had told the lady that I could go with her. My Dad was not happy because he did not want me to go. He loved me a lot and wanted me to stay, because I was the only one who was helping my Mom with things around the house. However, a couple days later, while my Dad was at work, Mama Guadalupe came back. My Mom had already packed my bag without me or my dad knowing and my Mom told me that if I did not get on the bus with Mama Guadalupe, that something bad would happen. I obeyed my Mom, and got on the bus.
The first month I was with Mama Guadalupe, I just cried. After that, I became a little more used to what was my new life. I lived there for about three years. Every so often, I would go back and visit my family. At first I tried to get my Mom to take me back, but she always said no.
I remember when I first got to the Village. I especially remember meeting Marlon and Daniel. They looked like my brothers and they have always been really special to me because they remind me of my brothers. I now have my own family here and am very thankful.
Now, I am thankful for the opportunity that God has given me. I am so grateful for Mami Amy and Tio Oscar and all the Americans who help provide us with all we need. God has many great things planned for your life and for the lives of each one of us. It’s so important that we always put him first because He is our Savior and the One who gives us strength for every day.
Thank you for everything.
