Walter is 16 years old. He and some of the other boys have recently started practicing with the semiprofessional league in Puerto Cortes. He was selected to be on the U-16 League Team. We are so proud of him, not only for his soccer skills, but also because he is such a wonderful young man. But enough from me, here is Walter’s story told by him, only translated into English… Enjoy!! —Mikaela
When I first arrived at the Village, I wasn’t feeling very well, I was really sad. I didn’t want to eat, or play and I spent a lot of time crying. As time passed, I started feeling more comfortable and started spending more time with the other boys. My first friends were Adonis, Juan, Denis and Arlen. We always got along really well.
The reason I came to the Village was because my mom and dad weren’t a part of my life. From the time I was born, it was my grandma giving me everything I needed and she was the one who was raising me. I am so thankful for all I have learned at the Village. I have learned English, how to work, and so many other things. I have already learned so much and I continue to learn.
When I accepted Jesus, my life changed. I wasn’t the same as I was before. I started seeking God more. I started behaving better. I still make mistakes, but not like I used to.
The first time I felt something special in my heart for soccer, I went to Tio Oscar and asked him if I could train and play with a team. He told me, “yes,” but he gave me some advice that I will never forget. He said, that all of it depended on me, my behavior and my studies, “first study, then soccer.” He reminded me that all my studies would help me when I am older. I am so thankful for Tio Oscar and this is an opportunity I will not take for granted.
Julio, Adonis, Kevin, Alexis, Nahun and I started practicing with a team. I am always telling them, “Whenever we do a drill or are playing, we always have to do our best, and we have to take this opportunity very seriously.”
One day the coaches called me and asked if I wanted to play on one of the semi-professional teams. I told him yes, I would really like that. When I played my first day, it felt really good to be playing. I am always trying my best. I am so thankful, because my team is now playing in the finals. I never could have hoped for this. Thanks be to God.
