From our Heart to Heart family here in Honduras, we hope you had a very Merry Christmas! Thank you to all of you who gave gifts or money and prayed for us. We truly felt your love and support. We simply could not have pulled off new clothes, shoes, presents and food for our big family here without your backing.
We are blessed.
Here in Honduras, the big Christmas parties happen on Christmas Eve. We all arrived at the Children’s Village in Tegucigalpita in the early afternoon and the festivities began. Last year, we had the big kids help make the day and evening special for the little kids and then we had a party for the teens later. It was a hit, and so we did the same thing this year. Our big boys helped to set up a soccer tournament for our little guys and they played soccer for hours. Our older girls set up the Xbox for dancing and also set up a Beauty Salon for their little sisters. The girls got all prettied up and the boys got sweaty.
I spent most of the afternoon at the Girls’ house, and loved watching our younger girls glow as their big sisters, whom they adore, carefully and lovingly painted their fingernails and toenails, and did their hair. They felt like princesses. The smiles were mirrored on the big girls’ faces as they took part in making the little girls feel special. And the boys did what they loved; battling it out on the soccer field, smiling, laughing and kicking the ball to their hearts’ content.
My favorite part of the day came when we gave the kids their new Christmas clothes and shoes. They all showered and got spiffed up. They boys gelled and styled their hair, and the girls ran around in a frenzy making sure that everyone looked just perfect. The end result was incredible. Every one of the kids walked around smiling from ear to ear, proud of how they looked wearing their new clothes. One of the little boys came to me and said, “I am only missing my hat and sunglasses.” He was so proud and excited, beaming with joy just like the rest of them. My heart nearly burst.
We all settled down for our family dinner, complements of one of the pigs we had raised. The house moms worked all day making sure that the dinner was perfect; they truly are an amazing group of hospitable and loving women. We all sat in the breezeway at the girls’ house taking our Christmas meal as one huge family. With stomachs full, we moved to the boys’ house, and our kids showed off some of their talents. Each class from the school performed a skit or song with pride and excitement. They all did a wonderful job, and provided us with great entertainment and many laughs. After opening gifts, which was exciting for all, we took a moment to remember why we celebrate Christmas. We sang a beautiful rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ to baby Jesus. I know He was smiling down upon us, as He saw the faces and smiles on some of His favorite children.
Our night ended with a movie and our teens enjoyed a much deserved party that lasted well into the morning. We danced “Dancing with the Stars” style, complete with judges and prizes, and played soccer on our lighted basketball court, as we basked in the delight of throwing a very successful Christmas celebration.
I know that there were moments of extreme chaos in our Christmas celebration, but as I reflect on it, it seems like it was nearly perfect. Each one of our children was extremely blessed and celebrated this Christmas. We enjoyed Christmas as one big family. I am confident that in our gathering together, we blessed Jesus and the victory that we each have in Him. After all, Jesus certainly loves His children.
A very Happy New Year to all of you! May you and your family be blessed this year!
