All about the Kids – by Amy Serrano, Honduras National Director
Happy August to all! I am sure that this month finds you all in the same state we are . . time to start sending the kids back to school! This summer just flew by. In fact we are still working on closing out the last school year with trades and certificates.
Well, it has been a roller-coaster ride this month in our financial state, to say the least! For several months, our accountant, Rick, has been saying that donations have been in decline. So, we began to reach out, make calls, send emails; doing all that we knew to do to take care of our kids. We hit bottom, however, when only 25% of what we needed to cover our expenses came in. So, I sent out a desperate plea on my prayer page on social media. Through that prayer plea, we found out that almost 700 people were no longer receiving our monthly email newsletter. As a result, several of you simply lost touch with the ministry and stopped supporting. We SINCERELY apologize for this, it was totally under our radar. The issue has been resolved and you should be receiving this newsletter via email starting in August.
A miracle happened, support began to pour in! Within 24 hours our need for the week had been supplied and within 3 days our estimated shortage for the month had come in. It wasn’t the donations that grabbed my heart, it was the amount of the donations made; because it showed the level of love you have for our kids, and that quite honestly left us all in awe! The night that we realized we were 75% short for our weekly running budget, we felt so alone! We didn’t know what to do, we had no help to raise 110 kids. Twenty-four hours later, we felt like the most loved and supported people in the world! Thank you so much for all you gave and to all of you that jumped in to help correct the problems in our system. You are all the best!
During our crisis we sent out a post to let all of you know where we were. On our webpage, Column one states our shortage for the week and Column 2 states our shortage for the month, which has been met, PTL!!! However the shortages were met with onetime donations to cover the need. We have been reaching out to our support base, but it may take some time to rebuild our operating budget to support our running costs. I believe that post also states what our projected shortfall is for the remainder of the year. We ask for your help to continue to bring in these funds. Ways you can help:
- Please post the graph on your own social media and ask your friends to consider donating.
- If you do not currently sponsor with H2H, would you prayerfully consider doing so, if that is something you would be able to do.
- If you currently sponsor, would you consider raising your giving by 5% to 15%? You may currently give $20 and feel that $2 more
would not make a difference, however, a mathematical fact is that if each donor gave $2 more that would bring extra income in the thousands of dollars for H2H.
In addition, we are also trying to get uniforms, shoes and supplies for our kids for start of the school year. We have received at least half, but still need the rest. We will need about $8000 more to get all that they need. The funds needed to send each of our children to school are as follows:
Uniform Shirt (2 each)$ 15
Uniform Pants (2 each)$ 30
PE Uniform (Shirt/Pants)$ 15
Work books $20
Medical insurance $10
Total per child $113
(please note that school uniforms and medical insurance are requirements from the Board of Education here in Honduras)
It has been a wonderful summer! We have had several teams visit, trips to the waterpark and the Mayan Ruins in Copan and the movie theater. We have painted, had barbeques, swim parties, tie dyed, necklaces, bracelets and masks, VBS, food programs, pizza and all kinds of fun! I want to thank all of the teams that have come and made it another summer to remember, for our kids. You are all the best, and may I mention life savers, as you give our kids lots of fun things to do during the long summer months.
We want to thank our team from Bethel Church in Washington State. This church is such a huge blessing, time after time. While here, they fortified the gravel in the road that they constructed for us on the property several years ago. They painted much of the interior of the girls house, as well as, did several arts and crafts projects with the kids. We just love you so much Bethel! Can’t wait until next summer!
Also a special thanks to our pastors’ team from Missouri and Michigan. This group comes each year to bless our kids with VBS. Two of the participants on this team were Diana’s sponsors and were planning to have Diana spend next summer with them. We went to the cemetary with the girls from our home and the team, to hold a special memorial at her grave. It was extremely touching and we are so thankful for that! In addition, the team blessed our kids with Pizza and ice-cream!
We said a sad goodbye to one of our favorite volunteers, Mikeala Gronseth. She spent most of the summer with us, but had to return to the US to this thing called “a job”. Mikaela is Ilcy’s sponsor, and Ilcy is currently living with her in the US to go to college. Mikaela is such a tremendous help when she is here and is a joy to have around. Thank you for giving up, yet another summer, to be with us, Mikaela.
God is so good and takes care of our kids in such an amazing way! Each day I’m amazed at what it takes to get our kids all that they need, but also how those that love them simply step up! May God bless you all in every way!
From Mary’s desk – by Mary Frenter, President
Recently, I received this email from one of our supporters. “When it rains it pours! This recent storm of God’s blessings upon you guys, I’m sure is related to your on-going and continued faithfulness in ministering to the needy. As you continue to invest in His kingdom, brace yourselves for more unexpected storms of blessings.”
In spite of the fact that our donations have been declining for the last year, God has continued to bless with staff and programs. We are working at getting the word out to His people to help with the financial end.
Some of you have heard my stories about the Divine Appointments God has arranged for H2H over the years. Well, another one just happened.
In early June, I was standing in the checkout lane at the grocery store here in Puerto Cortes. I heard a couple behind me speaking English, so of course asked where they were from. They introduced themselves as Robert and Karla Harris and said they lived in San Pedro Sula and had a business there. They were in Puerto Cortes visiting family who live here. He asked me what I was doing here, so I told him the short version of H2H. He asked if I had a business card. I did, and gave it to him.
Fast forward a month. I am now in the US visiting family. One morning, I open my computer and there is an email from Robert Harris who I met weeks ago at the grocery store. He said he was the owner of Harris Communications, a business that teaches English using Rosetta Stone to Government and businesses in Honduras. It just so happened that he was in the process of selling his offices in San Pedro Sula and wanted to donate to H2H ALL his equipment and furniture in the whole place!!! He has been in business here for 25 years. He also has offices in Tegucigalpa, La Ceiba, Panama, and El Salvador.
So, early Tuesday morning July 30th, 9 of us trekked to San Pedro Sula, and two moving truck loads later, had dismantled and moved his whole building of furniture and programs to Puerto Cortes!!! We are the blessed recipients of 27 computers which allow for up to 200 students per computer, loaded with Rosetta Stone (he owns the license for it), high end computer stations, 38 classroom tables, over 150 chairs, 10 white boards, several reception room chairs, 5 Administration PC’s that also have Windows 7, and so much more.
We are charged with the responsibility of figuring out how to use these gifts in the best way to not only bless our kids and staff, but others in Puerto Cortes who may want to learn English. To that end we are creating our new Mary Frenter English Academy that will be located on the third floor of our Spanish School for now. We will conduct classes there after school and on weekends. Mike Palacios, who has worked for the Harris company for 11 years, will help us set it all up and will train our teachers to use the programs.
